Humanistic Play Therapy
"It is in the atmosphere of acceptance that the child learns
self-acceptance and finds the courage to change."

About Humanistic Play Therapy
Humanistic play therapy is a gentle, developmentally appropriate, and evidence-based child-led form of psychotherapy that honours each child’s unique inner world and natural capacity for growth and healing. In individual, one-on-one sessions, children have a dedicated space where they can feel fully seen and supported.
The therapy process begins with a 1-hour initial parent consultation, where we explore your child’s background, current experiences, and individual needs. This provides information for the therapist to develop therapy goals that support your child’s therapeutic journey. To provide consistency, therapy sessions are held at the same day and time each week for 45 minutes.
Rather than directing the child or focusing on “fixing” behaviours, this approach creates a safe, accepting environment where children can express themselves freely through play.
In this environment, children are given permission to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in their own way and at their own pace. The therapist follows the child’s lead, trusting that play is the child’s natural language and an important way they make sense of their world.
At the heart of humanistic play therapy is the therapeutic relationship. By offering empathy, consistency, and unconditional acceptance, the therapist helps the child feel seen, understood, and valued.
Through play, children are supported to grow and heal in ways that feel natural, safe, and meaningful to them. The therapeutic power of play helps children to:
-
Build emotional wellbeing and feel more settled within themselves
-
Strengthen relationships and feel more connected to others
-
Develop confidence and recognise their own strengths and abilities
-
Express thoughts and feelings in ways that don’t rely on words
Humanistic play therapy recognises that when children feel truly accepted and understood, they are more able to access their own inner resources for healing and growth. By supporting emotional wellbeing, social connection, confidence, and communication, these foundations help children better understand themselves, navigate challenges, and feel more secure in their world.
